Geomatics & Information Management

BGC's geomatics department is familiar with the latest industry-standard CAD, GIS, and remote sensing software such as AutoCad 2010 / Civil 3D / Map / Land Development Desktop, ArcGIS 9 / ArcView 3.2, Surfer 9, gInt, and PCI Geomatica. The team is also able to develop custom tools or applications for internet or desktop use, specializing in Flash, VBA, VB.NET, ASP, JavaScript, Avenue and ArcObjects languages.

CAD Drafting / Cartography / Thematic Mapping

Plan maps

Geologic
Structural drafting

The BGC geomatics group services the BGC engineers, taking care of all their cartographic and drafting needs. The group has a broad background, in geography, GIS, and geology, and can use that background to design products that are most suitable to the data.

Drill Hole Logging

gInt
SQLServer
PDA Applications

The geomatics group has created PDA applications that can be used for data collection while logging drill holes or for hazard inspections of linear facilities. The applications can automatically upload datasets to a SQLServer database at the Vancouver office, over the internet from anywhere in the world. The data can then be verified and used in gInt drill logging software to produce strip logs, or incorporated into a client's hazard / risk assessment database. This system allows a fast turnaround for data collected in the field, quickly making it available for use by the client.

Remote Sensing / Terrain Modelling

DEM Generation
Orthorectification
PCI Geomatica

The geomatics group has arranged for airphotos and ground control in remote areas, allowing the in-house generation of digital elevation models, elevation contours, and orthophotos in locations where no digital topography is otherwise available at sufficiently fine scales, using PCI Geomatica, Surfer, AutoCad LDD, and 3DEM softwares.

Custom Tool Development

ArcObjects
Avenue
VBA / VB.NET
Internet Applications

Do you have a task that may be complicated and repetitive, involving AutoCad, ArcView, ArcGIS, or MS Office? The BGC team can develop custom tools to integrate with these softwares that will reduce repetition, and improve efficiency. The team can also create custom internet applications to access, edit, or display your data as you need it.

Internet Mapping

MapServer
PostGIS

BGC has created MapServer based internet mapping applications as prototypes to demonstrate tying spatial data presentation along pipeline and rail linear facilities to data queried from traditional relational database systems. Map features can be queried to draw out data or to create charts generated on-the-fly from other databases.

The use of a PostGIS spatial database with MapServer allows the creation of true GIS tools. MapServer can also draw upon spatial data from rasters, shapefiles, coverages, MapInfo tables, and ArcSDE or Oracle spatial databases. Map layers can be hosted on different computers located around the world and combined into a map by a central server before being delivered to your browser. Data is reprojected on-the-fly to the desired output map projection.

Open Source Solutions

MapServer
PostGIS
3DEM

The geomatics team has a mandate to be on the cutting edge of open source technologies and to be involved in the open source community. Integrating open source into your project can allow more of the cost to go towards developement and less to the licensing of softwares.

MapServer is an internet mapping software that when combined with a PostGIS spatial database can replace a costly ArcIMS or MapGuide + ArcSDE or Oracle Spatial system.
