Geo-Environmental & Site Remediation

BGC Engineering offers comprehensive services in hazardous site management ranging from initial site characterization through remedial action design, implementation, and post- implementation monitoring. The firm also has extensive experience serving as a client liaison to regulatory agencies, and developing and implementing strategies to lead the project throughout the complicated regulatory process.

BGC staff have investigated contamination in all media: soils, sediments, groundwater, surface water, and air. Contaminants present at these sites have included metals, volatile organics, and other organic compounds such as pesticides, PCBs and petroleum derivatives. Our highly trained professionals have studied abandoned waste sites, landfills, hazardous waste disposal facilities, mine sites, manufacturing and industrial complexes, and military bases. These sites range in size from under five acres to over 75 square kilometers.

Remedial measures evaluated and employed by BGC include:

Aquifer restoration, including groundwater extraction, treatment, and re-injection.
Physical and hydrologic barriers, including slurry walls, sheet piles, and well pumping for groundwater low containment.
Engineered covers and caps.
Complete or partial excavation and disposal at existing or on-site engineered and permitted landfills.
Developing conceptual designs
Surface-water contamination remediation, including source removal, channel modifications, isolation from other surface water systems, and dredging contaminated sediments.
Gas collection and abatement systems.
Venting of volatile organics in soils.
Waste treatment, neutralization, and fixation.
Incineration of solids and liquids.
Leachate extraction and treatment.
Alternative water supply and/or institutional controls.

Management services provided:

Prepare and obtain regulatory approval for remedial action plans.
Develop detailed designs, plans, specifications and bid documents.
Manage implementation of the remedial action.
Perform post-construction monitoring.

BGC provides comprehensive design services from alternative analyses to final plans and specifications. Remediation design plans and specification packages have addressed hydrocarbon losses at petroleum retail outlets, active and inactive oil and gas facilities, mines, railway yards, and industrial facilities.

Our groundwater remediation services incorporate removal of phase-separated hydrocarbons and extraction, treatment, and disposal of groundwater containing dissolved constituents.

Treatment technologies include air stripping, activated carbon, air sparging, and bioremediation. In response to local air quality ordinances, thermal incineration/catalytic conversion and vapor phase carbon technologies can be used to treat the off-gas from air strippers.
BGC services include excavation, treatment, disposal, and/or in situ remediation of contaminated soil. Aeration, land farming, and rotary kilns are used to treat excavated soil. Bioremediation and vacuum extraction are two important in situ technologies.

Our professional engineers and technical support staff procure material and manage excavation and mechanical contractors to assure construction activities are completed on time and within budget. With in-depth experience in this area, our staff ensures that the constructed remediation systems comply with final plans and specifications.

BGC's remedial action services include:

Assessing potential remedial actions throughout the investigative and analytical phases of a project
Screening and evaluating remedial action alternatives, both technically and economically
Conducting risk and endangerment assessments
Selecting and justifying the most appropriate remedial action
Developing conceptual designs
Preparing final detailed designs, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and schedules
Acquiring necessary permits
Overseeing and managing implementation of remedial action plans
Designing and performing post-construction monitoring
Serving as liaison to regulatory agencies and conducting negotiations on the client's behalf
Preparing health & safety plans and QA/QC plans

The firm's technical experts have capabilities and experience in designing:

Groundwater flow barriers (groundwater depression and flow reversals)
Groundwater extraction, treatment, and re-injection systems (aquifer restoration systems)
Surface-water drainage, collection, and treatment systems
Contaminated water cleanup systems including: air stripping; carbon absorption; biological; ion exchange; and resin systems
